August, despite its traditional warmth, has felt much more like autumn this year. Britons have braved at times severe rainfall, with thick cloud and showers covering areas not captured by the deluge. But recent forecasts have provided hope that sweltering heatwave conditions may cross the English Channel.

This weekend could see some sunnier spells, with Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis saying: “It’s been cool, often cloudy and sometimes damp so far this month.

“But it’s looking briefly very warm in the southeast on Saturday, with some sunshine and southerly flow from a hot France, 26-27C possible London.

“Make the most of it. Sunday cooler with heavy thundery showers.”

While some forecasters have promised a swift end to August’s miserable start by the end of the month, forecasting a “mini-heatwave” by the bank holiday.

The August bank holiday – the second of two this month – falls on August 30 this year.

And weather charts suggested the heatwave would have set in by the weekend on August 28.

The BBC Weather forecast from August 23 to 29 had “high confidence” in high pressure inducing “above-average” temperatures.

Although it couldn’t specify exactly how hot it would get, the forecast did add temperatures come with “an increased chance” for a heatwave.

Charts from NetWeather shows temperatures reaching 23C in parts of the UK by 6pm on Sunday, August 29, reaching the same levels the following day as well.

However, the Met Office poured cold water on heatwave expectations, saying people could expect some “very warm spells” but should expect “bland” weather this August bank holiday.

Speaking to The Sun, Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said summer 2021 would not be “remembered for warmth”.

Widespread flooding and “unremarkable” temperatures have left the forecast “wishy-washy”.

Mr Keates has added this is how the season will end, as “a heatwave is not on the cards”.

    DON’T MISS

Many people may want temperatures to reach those seen earlier this year.

Parts of the UK saw a brief heatwave in July when temperatures surged far above average.

The sudden plume of heat prompted the Met Office’s first-ever extreme heat warning.

Forecasters anticipated highs of 33C, and health officials warned of heat exhaustion amid a “heat health alert”.
