Unvaccinated Americans are more likely to die of non-Covid causes than those who received their shots, CDC report finds

    • A new CDC report compared non-Covid-related deaths among vaccinated and unvaccinated Americans
    • There were 1.11 deaths per 100 people per year among unvaccinated Americans compared to 0.35 and 0.34 for Pfizer and Moderna recipients, respectively
    • Fatalities were also higher among the unvaccinated compared to J&J recipients at 1.47 per 100 people per year versus 0.84 per year
    • Researchers say the findings show vaccines don’t increase the risk of death and suggest that vaccinated people are overall healthier than unvaccinated people

Unvaccinated Americans are more likely to die of non-Covid causes than those who got their shots, a new report finds.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compared deaths among those aged 12 and older who got any of the three authorized vaccines in the U.S. to teens and adults who did not.

Deaths due to causes unrelated to the virus were up to three times more likely in unvaccinated people than those who got either the Pfizer or Moderna Covid vaccines.

And non-COVID-19 fatalities were nearly twice as likely among Americans who were not jabbed compared to those who received the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The CDC says the findings provide evidence that vaccines do not increase the risk of death and may suggest that vaccinated people are overall healthier than unvaccinated people.

A new CDC report finds there were 1.11 deaths per 100 people per year among an mRNA unvaccinated comparison group (dark purple) compared to 0.35 and 0.34 for Pfizer and Moderna recipients (red and light blue), respectively. Fatalities were also higher among the unvaccinated (orange) compared to J&J recipients (light purple) at 1.47 per 100 people per year compared to 0.84 per year

Several past studies have shown that vaccinated at-risk Americans have lower rates of death from any cause than the unvaccinated.

For example, a May 2021 study found lower rates of deaths from all causes among unvaccinated nursing home residents than those who were vaccinated.

However, no studies have yet to compare mortality rates among vaccinated and unvaccinated people in the general population.

For the new report, published on Friday, the CDC gathered data on 11 million people enrolled in seven Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) sites.

VSD is a collaboration between the CDC and nine health care organizations that examines rare and serious adverse events following immunization.

Of the 11 million total people, about 6.4 million were those vaccinated against COVID-19 while the remaining 4.6 million had gotten a flu shot but not a COVID-19 jab.

Non–Covid deaths were defined as deaths that did not occur within 30 days of a COVID-19 diagnosis or receiving a COVID-19 positive test.

Death rates were calculated as deaths per 100 person-years, or number of persons who die per 100 per year.

After adjusting for factors such as age, sex, and race/ethnicity, the CDC found that the number of non-Covid deaths after dose one of Pfizer and Moderna were 0.42 deaths per year and 0.37 deaths per 100 people per year.

After dose two, this went down to 0.35 and 0.34 for Pfizer and Moderna, respectively.

Comparatively, there 1.11 deaths from non-related caused per 100 people per year in the unvaccinated group.

Among Johnson & Johnson recipients, there were 0.84 non-Covid deaths per 100 people per year.

Among the unvaccinated groups, non-virus-related deaths were 1.75 times higher at 1.47 deaths per 100 people per year.

‘There is no increased risk for mortality among COVID-19 vaccine recipients,’ the authors wrote.

‘This finding reinforces the safety profile of currently approved COVID-19 vaccines in the United States.’

Researchers say more studies are needed to figure out why unvaccinated people have higher rates of deaths unrelated to Covid, but theorize it its because vaccinated people tend to be healthier than the unvaccinated.
