Use Skype? Why you might want to avoid upgrading to Windows 11 anytime soon

The leaked build of Windows 11 has revealed the Meet Now feature, which gives Windows 10 users easy access to Skype’s video conferencing tools, is getting scraped. Support for the taskbar button, which was only introduced to Windows 10 last year, will be stopped with Windows 11.

However, it appears Microsoft is planning on revamping the feature and bringing it back, with Teams integration instead. This tinkered with feature is expected to be called “Meet & Chat”.

These leaked Windows 11 changes all appear to be part of Microsoft’s continued push to move Skype users onto Teams. Since the start of the pandemic, video conferencing tools have surged in popularity.

But surprisingly Skype, which launched back in 2003, fell behind rivals such as Zoom which people flocked too. While Zoom was the video conferencing service of choice at the start of the pandemic, rivals such as Google Meet and Microsoft’s own Teams app have surged in popularity.
