Many people will want to achieve weight loss goals and tone up at the same time. Dr Michael Mosley discussed how diets can speed up the metabolism.

He recommended it being used for “rapid weight loss” for obese people who quickly need to slim down for health reasons.

“I am an advocate for intermittent fasting for rapid weight loss,” the expert said.

“Eight hundred is the magic number.

“Every big weight loss study is now based on 800 calories, which is high enough to be sustainable and give you everything you need, and low enough to lead to rapid weight loss and other beneficial health changes.”

    DON’T MISS

The doctor and television presenter recommended a form of intermittent fasting where slimmers restrict what they eat to 800 calories on two days of the week.

Dieters should then follow a healthy Mediterranean plan for the remaining five days.

Other ways to follow intermittent fasting include fasting for 12 or more hours of the day, and eating during the remaining time.

Dr Mosley also addressed claims intermittent fasting slows the metabolism.

He suggested this is not the case when sticking specifically to the intermittent fasting plan.

“The idea that fasting ‘slows your metabolism’ is a myth,” Dr Mosley said.

“Under conditions of marked energy deficit – 800 calories per day or less – not only do you simply lose weight by eating fewer calories, but your body responds to the stress of fasting by enhancing hormone function to facilitate weight loss and burn fat for energy.”

On days where dieters consume more calories, the health expert spoke about the Mediterranean diet.

He said: “I would recommend eating a largely Mediterranean diet to ensure you get all the nutrients you need.

“The Mediterranean diet is low in sugar, but rich in healthy fats such as salmon, mackerel and nuts.

“Eating fruits and vegetables, as well as full fat yogurt and the occasional glass of wine in the evening is also encouraged.”

Dr Mosley added all slimmers should only follow the various diet plans if it is healthy for them to do so.
