Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist canceled by NBC after two seasons… but co-producer Lionsgate reveals they intend to find the show a new home

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has been canceled at NBC after two seasons.

The network decided not to renew the comedy-drama series starring Jane Levy and will not move forward with plans to move the show to NBC’s streaming platform Peacock, according to The Hollywood Reporter,

But there is hope that the show could find a home elsewhere.

A spokesperson for Lionsgate Television announced that the company, which co-produces the series, intends to shop Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, saying: ‘In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following.’

The series was critically acclaimed, winning Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming at the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards, among other accolades.

Levy, 31, earned a 2021 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical but lost to Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara.

However, the show’s ratings had dropped 14 percent since its first season and season two concluded with a 0.6 rating among the adults 18-49 demographic.

Lionsgate engaged in negotiations with NBC’s parent company NBCUniversal to move the show to Peacock but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist was reportedly expensive to produce and moving the series to Peacock would have required that additional deals be struck to address streaming rights.

The show followed Zoey Clarke, a computer programmer who begins to hear the innermost thoughts of people around her in the form of musical numbers after a huge playlist of songs was downloaded into her brain following an earthquake.

It also starred Skylar Austin, Alex Newell, Peter Gallagher, John Clarence Stewart, Mary Steenburgen, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar, Lauren Graham and Harvey Guillén.

The show had a dedicated fan base and was rated 88 percent fresh among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

After the cancelation was announced, creator Austin Winberg posted a Twitter thread urging the cast and fans to help save the show.

‘But right now I refuse to believe the show is dead. There is too much love and goodwill and the fan base is incredible. Now here is what I need.

‘I believe we can have a real chance somewhere else. But the more fan support we can throw behind it – the better. Please tweet #saveZoeysplaylist. Let’s get it trending and let the powers that be know the appetite is strong. Also open to any other suggestions to prove the love.
