Covid warning! Cases 'may surge in coming days as UK records calm before storm'

Epidemiologists in the country are concerned about drastically ditching Covid restrictions on Freedom Day – and its impact on increasing infection rates. They believe it’s too early to see the consequences. The UK recorded nearly 10,000 fewer Covid cases on Thursday compared to the same day a week earlier.

This 17.8 percent drop prompted hope that the cases may be decreasing in the nation.

The decrease in cases is following the mass gathering of crowds to watch the Euro 2020 final all across the country, including 60,000 at Wembley.

However, Professor Paul Hunter, an epidemiologist at the University of East Anglia, warns this decrease is not yet taking into account new positive tests following Freedom Day.

“The week-on-week percentage increase in cases has fallen from a peak of 43 percent last Sunday to just 24 percent today,” he told MailOnline.

Public Health England has warned that Covid cases are very high among younger people.

Twenty to 29 year olds now hold the highest infection rate for any age group since the start of the pandemic.

1,154 per 100,000 of people in this age group have the virus.

In comparison, the over 80s age group has 60.6 per 100,000 infected.

“Everyone in this age group should come forward and get their two doses of the vaccine to make sure they have the best chance of being protected,” Dr Yvonne Doyle from Public Health England told the Telegraph.

“Thanks to the vaccine, hospital admissions and deaths are not growing as quickly as previous waves.

“However, they are on the rise and we continue to closely monitor the data.”
