How to cut electricity bills by as much as £110 – 11 most 'energy draining' items

    Computer

Much like gaming devices, it seems households are also keen on leaving their computer on sleep, rather than shutting down completely.

Not only is this bad for your PC’s health, but it could also cause some damage to your finances.

With Britons leaving their computer on standby or sleep for around 21.7 hours every day, energy bills are likely to see an increase of £8.65 in unused energy.

When applied to the entire nation, this is an energy bill increase of £173,159,750.

Smart speakers and smart home devices

Bluetooth speakers and other smart devices do not need to be left on all of the time, yet 85 percent of Britons admit to never switching them off.

Leaving smart items on standby might be an easy option, but it certainly isn’t cheap.

An average of 22.3 hours worth of energy is wasted every day as a result, which equated to £6.76 in bills annually.

On a national scale, this equates to £159,841,197.

    Electric shower

British Gas recommend switching electric showers off properly at the wall, rather than leaving the switch on and simply turning the shower itself off.

Although electric showers aren’t expected to use much energy when left on at the mains, according to the research at least 76 percent of the nation leave theirs out of use for 22.6 hours daily.

This could drive bills up by £7.25 each year, or £153,116,025 nationally.

    Dishwasher

Dishwashers are another household appliance that often spend huge chunks of time sitting out of action but still switched on.

Around 79 percent of households admitted to never turning theirs off properly.

This equated to 22.4 hours on average of wasted energy – an energy bill increase of £5.05 each year.

Though it might not seem like a huge sum, when applied nationally this figure hits a whopping £110,852,463.
