Khabib Nurmagomedov has become embroiled in a heated war of words with old UFC rival Tony Ferguson as he finally reacted to the American’s goading on social media.

Khabib and Ferguson have one of the most notable rivalries in UFC despite never having faced off inside the Octagon – with the pair meant to have fought each other five times between 2015 and 2020 before something came up that prevented them going head-to-head.

Now Khabib has officially retired, a fight between the pair will never materialise, but that hasn’t stopped Ferguson taunting him on social media.

The American initially posted a photo on Twitter comparing the faces he had overcome compared to Khabib – with Ferguson’s left in a bloody mess while the Russian instead regularly choked out his opponents.

And then Ferguson decided to share a clip of the pair squaring up to one another before UFC 209, one of the many times they were scheduled to fight, while labelling him a ‘fathead’ in his caption.

But Khabib has now retaliated, writing on Twitter: ‘You have a fight soon, your opponent is very tough and most underestimated in lightweight division, focus on him.

‘I wish you and your family best, even though you look like a s***.’

Khabib was referring to Ferguson’s upcoming fight with Beneil Dariush on May 15 at UFC 262.

Dariush has been on a hot streak recently, winning his last six fights – with four of those coming via stoppage (two submissions and two knockouts).

Dariush is looking like a man reinvigorated following a period of two losses and one draw between March 2017 and March 2018.

Meanwhile for Ferguson, nicknamed ‘El Cucuy’. he is on a two-fight losing streak and was dominated in both fights against Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira.

Before the losing streak, Ferguson had been enjoying a 12-fight winning run, including victories over Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, Donald Cerrone, and Rafael dos Anjos among others.

Despite Khabib's retirement, it appears as if the pair will continue to take shots at each other
