Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have announced that the Duchess of Sussex gave birth to their second child and first daughter on Friday. Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born in a hospital in Santa Barbara, California at 11.40am local time. Rhiannon Mills discussed why the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may have delayed the announcement.

Ms Mills said: “This announcement about a great-grandchild for the Queen has been announced in a very different way from how we would expect for other great-grandchildren to be announced.

“It is from America, her first great-grandchild to be born outside the UK.”

She added: “It has been a difficult time for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, it is a huge amount of attention on them.

“I think what is interesting is that the child was born on Friday and they have decided to take a little bit of time before announcing to the world that they have a new child in their life.

“Again it is a sign of how they want to do things differently.”
