The probe concerns a mother and daughter who are among the senior directors at One Young World, a “global community for young leaders”. Accounts show the charity’s chief executive Kate Robertson, 67, received £1.3million in pay and perks between January 2017 and June 2021.
Her daughter Ella McKay, 33, one of the charity’s two managing directors, was awarded more than £580,000 in pay and benefits in the same period.
The Charity Commission has now launched a probe into One Young World, just days after portraits of Harry and Meghan taken at the charity’s annual summit in Manchester in September were published.
The group has enjoyed a soaring public profile thanks to the Duchess, who became one of its counsellors in 2014.
Meghan told delegates in Manchester she was “thrilled” Prince Harry was able to join her to “witness first-hand my respect for this organisation”. Harry was seen embracing Mrs Robertson at the event.
There is no suggestion that the Sussexes knew of the pay levels.
A spokesman for OneYoungWorld said it was working with the Commission “to answer any questions they may have”.
The spokesman added: “We are confident that there has been absolutely no wrongdoing.”
Trustee David Jones said the charity “complied with Charity Commission regulations”.
It is thought the organisation employs just 33 staff.
