Real Madrid have now confirmed that they have parted company with Zinedine Zidane via a club statement, in which they thanked him for his service. Reports emerged last night suggesting that the Frenchman had decided to call time on his second spell in charge of his former side and the news has now been made official.

Zidane told Florentino Perez late last night that he was planning to walk away after another disappointing trophy-less campaign.

Real Madrid missed out on the La Liga title on the final day of the season to rivals Atletico Madrid, who won their second championship under Diego Simeone.

The statement put out by Los Blancos read: “Real Madrid CF announces that Zinedine Zidane has decided to end his current stage as coach of our club.

“It is now time to respect his decision and show him our appreciation for his professionalism, dedication and passion in all these years, and for what his figure represents for Real Madrid.

“Zidane is one of the great myths of Real Madrid and his legend goes beyond what he has been as a coach and player of our club.

“He knows that he is at the heart of Real Madrid and that Real Madrid is and will always be his home.”

There has been plenty of movement on the European scene when managers are concerned in recent days.

Christophe Galtier left Lille after winning the Ligue 1 title while Antonio Conte followed suit and departed Inter Milan yesterday.

Zidane was tipped for a potential return to former club Juventus but now Massimiliano Allegri is expected to return to Turin.

The Italian stepped down as Juve boss in 2019 after winning his fifth successive Serie A title with the Old Lady.

His agent had been in talks with Real Madrid over replacing Zidane but Allegri’s entourage grew tired of waiting around.

Instead, he will now return to Juventus despite an approach from Inter Milan, where Simone Inzaghi is now amongst the favourites for the job.

Mauricio Pochettino could also be about to quit Paris Saint-Germain after just six months in charge.

He is currently holding talks with Tottenham over a sensational return to north London.

That would free up a vacancy in Paris, where Zidane could finally get the chance to work with Kylian Mbappe.

Zidane has always wanted to sign his compatriot at Real Madrid, where Perez dreams of bringing the World Cup winner to the club as his latest Galactico.
