Aaron Sorkin defended his casting of Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman in the upcoming feature Being The Ricardos during a sit-down with The Hollywood Reporter.

The 60-year-old filmmaker discussed numerous aspects of the forthcoming feature, which is centered on the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, best known for their work on the highly influential comedy series I Love Lucy.

The upcoming biopic has been in the works for several years, and it is currently set to be released on December 10, 2021.

During the sit-down, Sorkin pointed out that, during the casting process, he made a point of looking for an actress that could truly embody Ball.

‘I couldn’t cast Desi until we had our Lucy. What I needed was someone who absolutely owns it,’ he said.

The West Wing creator also expressed that he was not overly concerned about appearance during the process.

‘Finding an actress who looked like Lucille Ball wasn’t important to me, especially because I was excited by the idea that Lucille Ball doesn’t look like Lucille Ball,’ he said.

The filmmaker then remarked that, when he initially put out a call for serious talent, he received offers from numerous performers who ended up being added to the cast.

‘This was going to be a kind of tour de force performance. And then when Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem and J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda say they want to do your movie, your casting search is over,’ he recalled.

Sorkin also discussed the casting of Bardem, which was seen by many as a slight against actors of Cuban descent, although he noted that the actor’s child was fine with the decision.

‘Having an actor who was born in Spain playing a character who was born in Cuba was not demeaning. And it wasn’t just the casting consultant who agreed, Lucy and Desi’s Cuban American daughter didn’t have a problem with it,’ he said.

The writer expressed that Kidman’s performance was especially impressive and that viewers would recognize the quality of her acting.

‘As far as audience anticipation, that’s something I’m just not worried about. I’m certain that when people see the movie, they’ll leave feeling that Nicole has made a very solid case for herself,’ he stated.

Sorkin then revealed that he did not ask the cast to embody their characters and that they would be able to creatively interpret the actions of the figures.

‘Zooming with Nicole and Javier and everyone else, I’d make it very clear to them that I am not looking for a physical or vocal impersonation of these people,’ he said.

Being The Ricardos initially entered the development stage in 2015, and Cate Blanchett was originally set to portray Ball.

The film will follow the performers for a full week as they work on an episode of I Love Lucy.

The performer later exited the project and was replaced by Kidman earlier this year.
