Aimee Lou Wood and Bill Nighy don period costumes on the set of the upcoming film Living

    They are both set to star in an upcoming film adaptation of the Japanese classic novel Ikiru.

    And Aimee Lou Wood, 26, and Bill Nighy, 71, were both pictured wearing post WW2 period costumes in London on Monday when they worked on the set of Living.

    The pair of actors looked to have embraced their roles as they walked around the film set wearing period costumes befitting of the 1950s.

    Living, which has been written by Kazuo Ishiguro, is an adaptation of the 1952 novel Ikiru, which was originally penned by Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni.

    The original book was written in Japanese and had been translated into English for the adaptation. 

    The film, which is being directed by Oliver Hermanus, focuses on Nighy’s character, a civil servant who finds himself rebuilding post-Second World War London in 1952.

    He quickly becomes intrigued by a younger colleague who helps him utilise his years of experience to focus his energy towards completing a final big project.

    Speaking about the film, Variety reports that Ishiguro said: ‘The inner story suggests that it’s the responsibility of each of us to bring meaning and satisfaction to our life. That even against the odds, we should try to find a way to be proud of, and happy with, the lives we lead.

    ‘I believe this story can speak to the many of us obliged to spend long hours each day anchored to desks and screens — all the more so in this era of COVID — struggling to see what our individual contributions can possibly amount to within the broader picture.’ 

    While director Hermanus added that the purpose of the film is to show that one of the purposes of humanity is that each individual’s small contribution might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but that each small effort to help others is what life is about.

    Living is being developed by Film4 and Ingenious Media, and in association with Kurosawa Productions and executive producer Ko Kurosawa.
