Ariel Winter has thrown her support behind Britney Spears as the pop star fights her ongoing conservatorship battle.
In 2015 when she was a 17-year-old TV star on Modern Family Ariel succeeded in being emancipated after a legal battle involving her mother and sister.
‘I support Britney. I think Britney is incredible. Her story’s incredibly moving. I listened to her testimony,’ Ariel, 23, told Entertainment Tonight.

‘I think she is so smart, so capable. She should absolutely be free to live her life, be in control of her life, in control of herself. I think it’s absurd that this is the situation that she has to be in. I think the justice system, unfortunately, is corrupt.’
Ariel added: ‘I feel for her. I hope she gets to be in control of her life, her situation, everything, as soon as possible. I truly hope that people who have kept her away from doing that do suffer some sort of consequences, because she deserves all the happiness, the freedom, the love and the control of her life that she should have.’
Her own family drama went public in 2012 when her elder sister Shanelle Workman accused their mother Chrisoula of physical and emotional abuse towards Ariel.
At the time Ariel was just 14 years old and Shanelle, who is 20 years her senior, was asking for guardianship of her little sister.
Triumph: Last week Britney scored a major victory when she was permitted to hire her own lawyer and retained the services of one Mathew Rosengart
Shanelle was quickly able to obtain temporary emergency custody and Ariel’s father Glenn Workman got temporary control of his teenage daughter’s estate.
It took until 2014 for the family to come to a pre-trial agreement whereby Shanelle would retain custody of Ariel throughout her minority.
Chrisoula staunchly denied the abuse allegations but after the agreement was reached she and Shanelle jointly said: ‘The family has moved beyond the conflict.’
In May 2015 Ariel joyfully announced on social media: ‘I am now officially emancipated!!! I’m really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity.’

She added: ‘Most importantly I want to thank @shanelle_gray and my father for their special support regarding this matter, I really couldn’t have done it without them.’
Britney has been under her conservatorship since 2008 after she suffered a breakdown and allegedly locked herself and her sons in the bathroom during a custody dispute with her ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Lately she has been fighting a protracted legal battle to try and remove her father Jamie Spears from her conservatorship.
Last month, Britney claimed her conservatorship had left her ‘traumatized’ and ‘depressed’ and she called for her father – who used to be in charge of her whole conservatorship, but now only oversees her financial affairs – to be jailed.
Family matters: The legal drama began in 2012 when Ariel’s sister Shannon Workman, whom she is pictured with in 2014, obtained emergency custody after accusing their mother of abuse
‘They have me going to therapy three times a week and to a psychiatrist,’ said Britney who has also alleged that her conservatorship prevents her from having her IUD removed.
‘I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. I don’t feel like I can live a full life. In the meantime, I want this therapist to come to my home, I’m not willing to go to Westlake….They set me up by sending me to the most exposed places. I need your help,’ said the Womanizer hitmaker.
‘My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, including my management…. they should be in jail.’
Until last month she was being represented by the court-appointed attorney Samuel Ingham who had been her lawyer for 13 years.
Who’s who: Ariel rose to fame playing the acerbic teen Alex Dunphy on the sitcom Modern Family for which she is pictured in a publicity shot
However last month after she asked during a hearing to be able to chose her own legal counsel, Samuel resigned.
Last week she scored a major victory when she was permitted to hire her own lawyer and retained the services of one Mathew Rosengart.
‘My firm and I are moving aggressively and expeditiously to file a petition to remove Jamie Spears. Unless he resigns first,’ Mathew said while speaking to Britney’s supporters outside a Los Angeles courthouse.
