A staggering 530,126 alerts were sent, up 46 percent on the previous week. A record number of people in England and Wales are being asked to self-isolate for up to 10 days and unions claim this has caused “havoc” on the production line.
Steve Bush, the National Officer for Automotive at Unite, told BBC Newsnight: “I believe we are potentially hours, not days or weeks, away from our first temporary closure of sites within the UK”.
Speaking to Emma Barnett, he said the number of people self-isolating posed further problems to business.
Bush’s colleague, Steve Turner, is equally concerned about the economic impact of self-isolating.
Unite’s assistant general secretary said: “It is clear that something has to be done in time for July 19, or else people will simply start deleting the app en masse to avoid isolation notices”.
Professor Lucy Easthope, who advises the Government on disaster planning, suggests it is unsurprising the app has led to an issue in staff shortages.
“We feared we would see in some workforces 80 percent absenteeism”, she claimed.
“There will come a point where we simply can’t operate like that, particularly around things like food production.”
This all comes as coronavirus cases in the UK continue to rise.
Yesterday, Britain recorded another 48,533 Covid-cases and witnessed 63 pandemic-related deaths.

The Telegraph revealed the app has come under fire as it is believed it can penetrate walls to ping neighbours, telling them they need to self-isolate.
If you have downloaded the app and come into contact at a distance of two metres for 15 minutes with somebody who has contracted, the virus then you will receive a notification to self-isolate.
