Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was mobbed by a group of excited fans midway through Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan on Tuesday. Play was halted in the game’s closing stages as four individuals rushed onto the pitch from the stands and swarmed Fernandes in search of a photo.

Portugal thumped Azerbaijan 3-0 at the Baki Olimpiya Stadionu in Baku, courtesy of goals from Bernardo Silva, Andre Silva and Diogo Jota.

Fernandes helped his nation start the goalscoring in the 26th minute as he assisted Bernardo’s excellent opener before playing the entire match.

The win moved Portugal above Serbia into top spot in UEFA Group A of 2022 World Cup qualifying.

Fernando Santos’ side are on 13 points after four wins and a draw from their opening five games, ending the international break on a high.
