COP26 LIVE: Rishi Sunak to unveil new $100bn masterplan after furious budget backlash

The Chancellor will lead the event on Wednesday morning marking the progress made on delivering the financial support which was part of the Paris Agreement agreement signed five years ago. The masterplan will mobilise private finance and reset the financial sector to spring into action. Mr Sunak will also reveal plans to make the UK the net-zero financial centre of the world, including ambitious targets to slash harmful greenhouse emissions.

The landmark announcement comes as Boris Johnson announced he was “cautiously optimistic” about the prospects for a new deal at the make-or-break climate change summit to curb global warming.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister welcomed a string of announcements by the assembled leaders on deforestation and emissions.

More than 80 world leaders, including Joe Biden and Ursula von der Leyen, signed up to a deal committing to reducing methane production by 30 percent by 2030.

Another groundbreaking deal, introduced by Mr Johnson, was confirmed yesterday after more than 100 world leaders commit to end and reverse deforestation by 2030.
