Covid booster jab rollout 'extremely slow' and risks winter lockdown as cases skyrocket

Former Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir David King criticised the slow booster programme rollout. While speaking on Sky News he admitted it was surprising how slow the rollout had been compared to the initial vaccination scheme. Rising coronavirus cases have sparked concerns that a winter lockdown may be necessary to prevent further hospitalisations and deaths.

On Monday, coronavirus cases were reported at 49,156, the highest figure since mid-July.

Sir David said: “I think the booster scheme has been rolled out extremely slowly.

“It is very surprising considering the success of the vaccination scheme.

“On the booster rollout, I have had my booster shot, I do know many older people who haven’t yet had theirs.

“I cannot understand this, if the vaccines are available, what is happening to the rollout.”

Sky’s Shingi Mararike also reflected on the impact a slow uptake among young people was having on the UK’s fight against coronavirus.
