Drivers set for 'nasty surprise' as over half of motorists unaware of new car tax changes

A poll from experts at Motorway.co.uk has found only 43 percent of motorists living in and around London know about Sadiq Khan’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) expansion. Meanwhile, just 35 percent of motorists in and around London know how to check whether their vehicle will be charged.

Even fewer motorists are confident on where the ULEZ boundary actually runs from.

Just 29 percent are aware it stretches across much of South West London including Croydon, Kingston Upon Thames and Sutton.

Only one third of road users are aware the scheme will run in West London areas such as Brent, Ealing and Harrow.

Just a third are also aware the scheme will run in the North such as Barnet and Enfield as well as the South East such as Lewisham, Bexley and Bromley.

Tom Leathes, CEO at Motorway has warned drivers were set for a “nasty surprise” when they cross into the charging zone from next week.

He said: “Despite having over three years to prepare for the ULEZ expansion, more than half of drivers in and around London are clearly still in the dark about this news and will get a nasty surprise when they cross the north or south circular on Monday.

“If the car you’re driving means you’ll be charged when you enter the ULEZ, then selling it may be an obvious choice to save money.

“With used car prices at an all-time high, now is a great time to sell.

“Even non-compliant cars are going for great prices as those who live outside of Clean Air Zones like the ULEZ won’t be feeling the pinch of these fuel charges.”

Drivers can check whether their vehicle is compatible with the new ULEZ using the online vehicle checker tool.

Motorists only need to enter their registration plate and whether the car was registered in the United Kingdom or abroad.

Last week at Mayor’s Question Time, Mr Khan said there was a “number of things” they were doing to let Londoners know ULEZ was coming.

This included announcements on radio and TV, posters and emails to residents.

Motoring expert Amanda Stretton added: “It’s really shocking that despite Transport for London’s best efforts to communicate the expansion of the ULEZ only 43 percent of drivers around the London area have a clue about it.

“Add to that only 35 percent know how to even check if their vehicle will be charged!

“Clearly motorists have had their heads in the sand about this but with more cars on the road now that people are returning to work, we will see a large number of unaware drivers facing penalties from 25th.

“It will be interesting to see if these penalties translate into an increase in these types of cars going for sale in the not too distant future.”
