Ed Sheeran has revealed his weight increased to over 15 stone when he quit touring, after indulging in beer and fried foods.

The singer, 30, said he decided to change his lifestyle three months before the birth of his daughter Lyra, 15 months, and he’s since shed five stone.

Speaking to The Sun, Ed admitted he drank while feeling lonely on tour and then started bingeing on unhealthy foods when he took time off from performing.

He said: ‘I loved chicken wings, wine, beer, and I never exercised. Since becoming a dad I’ve become quite clean-living. But I think actually taking time off and not being on tour was the worst thing for my health because I would drink every single day.

‘I stopped three months before Lyra was born because I was determined I was going to be the person to drive my wife to the hospital. I was 15-and-a-half stone at my peak and I think I’m ten-and-a-half now – I was big, it really showed. I had a 36 waist — now I’m down to 28.’

Ed, who is releasing his fifth album = (pronounced ‘equals’) on Friday, said he still enjoys food and alcohol now but no longer goes overboard.

He said: ‘It was when Cherry was pregnant the penny dropped. Lyra has been the biggest motivation in terms of detoxing my life, and I think it’s a change everyone needs to go through if they’re a parent.’

Speaking about the loneliness an artist can face while they are on tour, Ed told how being a solo artist can be very solitary.

The hitmaker had a tour crew of people in their fifties who were married with children and didn’t want to go out.

Ed said he would go to bars by himself to see where the night took him and sometimes ended up in ‘dangerous situations’ where bad things could have happened to him but he is ‘grateful’ they didn’t.

Ed has received advice from other artists including Robbie Williams who he said checks up on him a lot.

Elsewhere, the singer revealed his latest album is a ‘quarter-life crisis’ record that saw him take inspiration from the death of his friend and tour manager Michael Gudinski.

Ed said he felt like an adult for the first time during the six-month period of his daughter being born and Michael passing away.

Speaking about becoming a father, Ed said he and Cherry had no help from family as Lyra was born during the pandemic which lead him to changing almost every nappy himself.

Ed said the couple have recently hired a girl to help them out with Lyra now he has returned to work but he still makes sure he’s there each morning and night.

The musician added that he would love to have more children but it all depends on what Cherry wants as she will have to carry them.

On his new album, Ed said he is less competitive with other artists than he used to be and he expects Adele’s new album 30 to be the biggest selling of the year.

The singer said he believes out of UK acts, him, Adele, Coldplay and Harry Styles are at ‘a certain level’ in terms of record sales and reach.

Ed said at the beginning of his career he felt like no one wanted him as he would release an album and it would be ‘savaged’ by critics.

However, after 10 years in the industry, he feels like he has earned his place.
