Emma Raducanu’s meteoric rise in tennis continued after she booked her spot in the last-four of the US Open thanks to a straight sets victory over Belinda Bencic. The Brit overcame the Olympic champion 6-3 6-4 at Flushing Meadows.

The victory has moved her one step closer to arguably sealing one of the greatest Grand Slam triumphs ever, considering the 18-year-old had to qualify for the tournament itself.

Raducanu also made history, becoming the first ever qualifier at the US Open to reach the last four, where she will battle it out against either Karolina Pliskova or Maria Sakkari for a place in the showpiece final.

To add to her elation, the win has guaranteed that she will move above Jo Konta in the world rankings and become Britain’s No 1 tennis star.

Raducanu was ranked No 10 in Britain and No 338 in the world at the start of Wimbledon before making her move up the ladder after reaching the fourth round at SW19.

If she manages to beat Pliskova or Sakkari in the last-four showdown, she will set up a mouth-watering final against Leylah Fernandez or Aryna Sabalenka.

A US Open final against Fernandez is a very intriguing prospect, with the Canadian teenager also leaving everyone in awe at Flushing Meadows having reached the semis.

And Raducanu was quick to praise her potential final opponent following her win: “To have so many young players here doing so well, just shows how strong the next generation is. Leylah is doing incredibly well.”
