She is set to star alongside Emma Stone in the 101 Dalmations spin-off Cruella. 

And Emma Thompson revealed the elaborate measures she went to play fashionista Baroness von Hellman in the Disney franchise on Lorraine on Wednesday.

The actress, 62, joked the underwear she had to wear beneath her character’s costume was ‘like a torture item’.

Emma was interviewed alongside her co-star Stone, 32, by Mark Heyes, who said: ‘I kind of looked, you’ve got serious underwear on there. That’s hardcore underwear. Was it super uncomfy?’

To which Emma replied: ‘Oh I mean like a torture item. I don’t like wearing underwear full stop. I stopped wearing underwear a long time ago. It’s not my scene. 

‘I don’t like comfortable underwear. I find comfortable underwear uncomfortable. 

‘The underwear that was required to turn me into that shape was what can only be described as industrial.’

Emma S said: ‘Can you imagine if that wasn’t fun to play? I mean just the opportunity to really dig into the darkest, darkest parts is really cool.’  

It comes after Emma compared her underwear to a ‘ship’s rigging’ and joked she had ‘people hauling on ropes’ to get her into it on the set of Cruella.

She told The Sun: ‘My underwear was like a sort of ship’s rigging. I mean, there were people hauling on ropes. 

‘It was a lot. So peeing was hard and involved a team of people.

‘The underwear was a big old deal. Not for la Stone, obviously, because she’s slender as a lily and didn’t need to wear a corset like a frigging whalebone aria.’  

The film is a prequel to Disney’s 101 Dalmatians and follows a young Estella de Vil, an aspiring fashion designer in 1970s London. 

The plot centres on how Estella became the ruthless villain Cruella.

The movie is directed by I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie and the supporting cast includes Emma Thompson, Mark Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

It opens in theatres on May 28 and becomes available as premium video on demand on streaming service Disney+ the same day.

In the film, the Baroness keeps her slim figure by only eating small cubes of cucumber rather than substantial meals.

Emma said of the character trait: ‘One of the things I really enjoyed hating about her was the fact that she didn’t eat.

‘I don’t trust people who don’t eat. There, I’ve said it.’  

Emma – who has been married to actor Greg Wise, 55, for 18 years – said she drew on her own life experiences for inspiration in the role.

She added that she has spent so many years of her acting career playing ‘good women in frocks’ and now she is happy she gets to play ‘evil woman in frocks.’

The release of the film is one of the first big movies to hit cinemas since the entertainment industry was shut down due to the pandemic.
