The UK Government has U-turned and ditched plans to overhaul the standards system after Owen Paterson faced suspension for breaching lobbying rules. Nicola Sturgeon will no doubt jibe at Boris Johnson’s Government in today’s FMQs after she blasted their actions yesterday.
Scotland’s First Minister, called the UK Government corrupt after they saved Owen Paterson from a 30-day ban after he broke lobbying rules. She said it was a “dark day for the Commons” after several Tory MP’s saved Owen Paterson from a 30-day ban.
Today’s FMQs could see a showdown between Sturgeon and Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross, as they go head-to-head at noon in Scottish Parliament today.
Sturgeon said the Tories were doing “classic corruption”, she continued: “Protecting the MP found guilty of a standards breach and now trying to hound the independent investigator out of office. Yesterday was a reminder of the risks this Tory government poses to basic democratic norms.”
Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Commons leader, admitted the move had “created a certain amount of controversy”.
It is expected that Mr Ross and Ms Sturgeon will have a heated debate on the matter later today.
