Gross misconduct notice issued to police officer in wake of Plymouth shooting

Jake Davison killed his mother and four other people in the Keyham area of Plymouth in August. Davison first obtained a gun licence in 2018 but Devon and Cornwall Police suspended the killer’s licence in December 2020 over concerns about his suitability to hold a weapon.

However, it emerged Davison’s gun licence was reinstated by police just weeks before he went on to murder five people.

Now, the Independent Office for Police Conduct has confirmed a member of police staff has been issued with a gross misconduct notice over their handling of Davison’s application for a shotgun.

Following the tragic murder spree, the IOPC confirmed Davison’s licence had been revoked in December following an allegation of assault in September 2020.

But reports suggested Davison’s licence was restored in July after the ‘incel’ went on an anger management course.

Police confirmed that six people have died after the shooting, which took place shortly after 6pm.

Stephen Washington, 59, and Kate Shepherd, 66 were also killed by Davison, 22, who took his own life.

He also killed his own mum, Maxine Davison, 51.

Lee Martyn and his three-year-old adopted daughter, Sophie, were also killed in the shooting.

The incident was the first mass shooting in the UK in 11 years.

Conservative MP Johnny Mercer, who represents Plymouth Moor View, described it as “a truly devastating day”.

Luke Pollard, Labour MP for Plymouth Sutton & Devonport, said it was a “very grim day for our community and our city”.

Tory Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall, released a statement.

She said: “My thoughts are with the relatives of the deceased, those injured and the people of Plymouth after this horrendous and tragic incident.

“I would like to pay tribute to the hard work of our blue light services this evening who have done all they can to deal with those directly affected and get the injured the best possible medical care.”
