Hair loss: The surprising vegetable juice shown to help prevent alopecia

There are things you can try if your hair loss is causing you distress. But some treatments are not available on the NHS and can be costly. Opting for a more natural remedy is also the better option. With that in mind, the juice from one vegetable has shown impressive results in helping to increase hair regrowth. How?

The idea is that the sulphur in onion juice helps hair regrowth, said WebMD.

The health site added: “There’s not much research on this, but a small study tested it in people with alopecia areata, which causes patchy hair loss. Half put onion juice on their scalp twice a day; the rest used tap water.

“After two weeks, 74 percent of the onion juice group had regrown some hair, compared with 13 percent of tap water users.

“If you try it, you might want to add something that masks the smell.”

Science shows that there are many ways onion juice can help with hair loss. For one, onions are high in dietary sulphur, a nutritional element our bodies need.

Sulphur is found within amino acids, which are components of protein.

Proteins – and especially keratin, which is known to be sulphur-rich – are needed for growing strong hair.

When added to the hair and scalp, onion juice can provide extra sulphur to support strong and thick hair, thus preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth.

One published in Wiley Online looked at onion juice as a new topical treatment for alopecia.

In the study patients were divided into two groups with the first group (onion-juice treated) consisting of 23 patients, 16 males (69.5 percent) and seven females (30.5 percent).

The second group (control, tap water treated] consisted of 15 patients, eight males (53.3 percent) and seven females (46.6 percent).

The two groups were advised to apply the treatment twice daily for two months.

Re-growth of terminal coarse hairs started after two weeks of treatment with crude onion juice and at four weeks, hair re-growth was seen in 17 patients (73.9 percent).

At six weeks, the hair re-growth was observed in 20 patients (86.9 percent) and was significantly higher among males (93.7 percent) compared to females (71.4 percent).

The study concluded that onion juice gave significantly higher results with regard to hair re-growth and that it can be an effective topical therapy for patchy alopecia areata.
