Halle Berry shared that she trained for more than two years to play a disgraced fighter in her directorial debut while appearing Monday on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The 55-year-old actress told Jimmy, 53, that she had to wait until Blake Lively, 34, passed on the Bruised script before she could jump in to play disgraced MMA fighter Jackie Justice.

Halle said she had loved MMA fighting even before she got the script and started training.

‘That’s why when I got this script I was like this came from heaven,’ said Halle who looked glamorous wearing a low-cut black and gold kimono-style dress. ‘I’ve loved boxing since I was a kid [Thomas] Hearns and [Muhammad] Ali, [Marvin] Hagler and [Sugar Ray] Leonard were my heroes as a little girl so this was tailor made for me in so many ways.’

Halle said when she first got the script that Blake was attached to it and the character originally was written for a very young Irish Catholic white girl. She said she told her agent that she loved it and had to play this part. Her agent told her that if Blake passed on the project that she would be the first person to get it.

‘I had to patiently wait for six months until Blake decided it was not something she wanted to do,’ said Halle, who reimagined the character after taking over the role.

Jimmy told her that it was weird to see her looking all beautiful when in the movie she fought viciously and appeared to be being beaten in a serious way.

Halle, who also directed the movie, told Jimmy that it was ‘so incredible.’

    ‘You liked that?’ Jimmy asked.

Halle told him that she did.

‘I loved that,’ she said. ‘I loved it.’

He said that if he directed his first movie that he would be a house sitter or something but that she played one of the main characters in the movie. He said she picked the least easy thing to do.

‘I know it was bananas,’ said Halle. ‘Sometimes these things just find you.’

‘I will never do it again,” she quipped.

Jimmy said she probably did a lot of training for this role and asked her how much she did.

‘No kidding around, I trained for around two and half years,’ she said. ‘I would go anywhere, always four days a week, sometimes six days a week, for four to six hours.’

He asked if she was in gyms fighting.

‘Fighting, learning all these martial arts disciplines,’ said. ‘I had to learn Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, wrestling, Judo, boxing, kickboxing, all of these elements come into play in MMA.’

Jimmy asked her which one of those did she gravitate toward and Halle said Jiu Jitsu.

‘That’s the ground game,’ she said. ‘It’s like wrestling when you are on the ground and you are doing all these moves. That is naturally where my talents lie.’

Halle said she was fighting with Valentina Shevchenko, a professional mixed martial artist and former Muay Thai fighter, who is the current women’s flyweight champion.

‘Do you have a conversation beforehand where you say take it easy on me or don’t take it easy on me?’ said Jimmy. ‘If I were her I would be terrified to hit you.’

Halle said at first she was scared to hit her and she wasn’t connecting with her kicks. She said she finally said to her, ‘Val you gotta do it. I have to feel it. I’ve never done this, that is why you are here. Give it to me.’

‘She gave it to me and she broke two ribs,’ Halle revealed while adding that Valentina was mortified.

Jimmy asked her if she felt now that she could beat up a stranger and Halle said ‘yeah.’ He asked her what she would do and she said she would maneuver herself to get into a ‘rear naked choke.’

‘And what do people say thank you and leave?,’ Jimmy said jokingly.

Halle said no that they pass out and then it’s lights out. She said that most men wouldn’t even think that a woman could do that so there was an element of surprise. He asked her if she had choked anyone out and felt them go unconscious.

‘Almost, they have taped out and I didn’t realize,’ she said.

Halle said she was in rehearsal and doing a move on one of her partners when he was losing oxygen. She said she was so into learning that she didn’t immediately realize. She said she didn’t know at the time that the tap meant to stop.

    ‘Learned that day,’ she said.

Jimmy noted that Cardi B, 29, did a song on the movie’s album. He then asked her if she saw what happened after she called Cardi B the queen of hip hop on Twitter and reminded her that Nicki Minaj fans got really mad at her.

    ‘I know,’ she said.

He asked her if she stood by her assessment that Cardi was the queen of hip hop and she said that she did.

‘But there is room for more than one queen, people,’ said Halle. ‘Nicki is a queen in her own right. H.E.R is a queen. All these ladies are queens.’

Jimmy said he noticed that after fights there was more emotion between the women.

‘I think for women because we are more emotional by nature and I think being a part of a blood sport like this is not something that’s normal for women,’ Halle said. ‘And we don’t, you know, lose our female card because you become a fighter. So there is a lot of emotion between women. I think there is camaraderie that’s a little different than men.’

Directing was a new project, Halle said, but she did reveal that while filming the movie Jungle Fever that Spike Lee allowed her to shadow him and helped her understand film making.

‘And you were a crackhead in that movie,’ Jimmy said.

Halle corrected him and said, ‘Crack ho.’

She said actually that Spike at first didn’t think she could play the crack ho and she washed off her makeup to show him that she could.

Bruised is scheduled to be released on November 24 on Netflix.
