Heartburn medicine taken by millions has been linked to higher risk of 7 cancers

A 2021 study, published in the journal Cancers, linked ranitidine contaminated with NDMA to cancer.

The study reported that there were significantly higher proportional reporting ratios for pharyngeal, oesophageal, stomach, colorectal and pancreatic cancers.

However, the gloomy list doesn’t end here as the ratios were also elevated for anal and gallbladder cancer but not statistically “significant”, the study reports.

The research team obtained their data from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Report System, which is a database containing adverse event reports, medication error reports, and product quality complaints that result in adverse events.

This ability of ranitidine to degrade over time into NDMA was raised with FDA, with experts stressing this risk is particularly high if the medicine is stored in hot and humid conditions.
