Homes evacuated and street shut after grenade fears spark emergency – bomb crew called in

    West Yorkshire Police were called to Shaw Lane, in Huddersfield, at around 10.39am today after it was believed a grenade was found on the towpath. Several houses and businesses were evacuated while experts were called in.

    A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “At 10.39am today (Thursday), police were called about what was believed to be a grenade which had been found on the towpath, close to Shaw Lane in Milnsbridge.

    “A cordon was put in place for people’s safety and a small number of residents and businesses were requested to temporarily evacuate.

    “Shaw Lane was also closed off for a short time.

    “A controlled explosion has since been carried out and the cordon removed to allow people to return.”

    Multiple police officers were called to the scene as well as the Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

    Experts have conducted a controlled explosion so people could return to their homes and businesses.

    The cordon of New Street has since been lifted.
