The retired sprinter took aim at the US collegiate system that produces athletes to compete in the Olympics. Speaking to BBC News, Mr Johnson said: “The collegiate system has produced all the talent in the US and a lot of these atheltes have come through it. It’s a difficult system, they show up at the trials and that’s their last good race.
“Most of the US athletes are true professionals, they compete on the circuit. This is completely different.
“There is almost a disconnect between competing on a wider US team and being a professional.
“It creates that team aspect and I think when they get to these championships, it’s so different to competing on the circuit that’s it a bit of a struggle.”
He added: “The US is the only country in the world where out Olympic team isn’t government-funded.
