    Legendary singer Kamahl Kamalesvaran, 87, has split from his wife Sahodra, 82, after 55 years of marriage. 

    The Hey Hey It’s Saturday star shared the sad news on Monday, telling New Idea magazine he’s praying the breakup is ‘only temporary’. 

    ‘She really is the wind beneath my wings. I now realise I probably wasn’t the most attentive husband. Fame can do that – it can distract you from what really matters,’ he lamented.

    ‘But I’m keeping everything crossed we can work through this rough patch, as she really is my everything,’ he said. 

    The Malaysian-born star, whose real name is Kandiah Kamalesvaran, has moved out of the marital home and is living alone at a country club in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.  

    Kamahl said he regrets taking his wife’s ‘graciousness for granted’ and regrets not giving her ‘more hugs’ during their long marriage.

    The estranged couple remain close, however, regularly meeting up for dinner. 

    ‘She still cooks me her unbelievably delicious lamb shanks every fortnight,’ he revealed.  

    Kamahl married Sohodra in 1967 without the approval of his family.

    ‘There was no way my parents would’ve given their blessing. Because she was Indian, I was Sri Lankan. And the twain shall never meet,’ he told ABC’s Talking Heads in 2005. 

    ‘It’s like the Greeks and the Italians, and the Irish, you know, the Catholics and the Protestants. That sort of prejudice.’  

    The couple share two children, musician Rajan, 62, and singer Rani, 60.

    Kamahl been a part of the Australian music industry for more than 50 years, known best for his regular appearances on Channel Nine’s variety show Hey Hey It’s Saturday. 

    The singer, who arrived in Adelaide in 1953, was often the butt of jokes by stars such as Daryl Somers, John Blackman and Molly Meldrum, and was associated with the catchphrase: ‘Why are people so unkind?’ 

    He also enjoyed considerable success in Europe, with his 1975 single The Elephant Song hitting No. 1 in the Netherlands as well as making it into the top 30 in Denmark.
