Kate and Prince William must 'step up to the plate' as Queen scales back royal duties

Speaking to OK!, royal author Katie Nicholl has said that the Queen is relying on the couple, along with Prince Charles and Camilla, to support her. Ms Nicholl said: “As she recovers and rests on the advice of doctors, it is down to the people who she refers to as ‘my substitutes’ to step up to the plate.

“We know there is an extensive list of substitutes on the bench.”

The royal commentator added: “You’ve got the Wessexes, Princess Royal, but really what is interesting is that when it comes to these key events, it is the fab four who we are seeing.

“They look increasingly close and confident and very much as a team.

“You really get the impression this is team Windsor.”

Ms Nichol also stated that there has been an effort to “show there is unity at the heart of the royal family”, something which is becoming increasingly obvious through the couples’ recent outings together.

She argued that the couples are putting on a united front in order to show the monarchy’s stability amidst worries about the Queen’s health.

The author said: “This unity is happening at a time when there has been a lot of discord and fragmentation, and to really show the top tier of working royals.

“What you’re seeing in this fab four is the future of the House Of Windsor, in a very clear and deliberate image.”

The couples have also been representing the royal family at the COP26 climate summit, with Prince William and Prince Charles both giving important speeches to the delegation.

Meanwhile, the two wives of the future kings were also highly visible at the event.

This comes after the Queen was forced to cancel her attendance at COP26 following poor health.

Instead, she gave a pre-recorded address to delegates from Windsor Castle, following doctors’ advice to rest.

Before this, the Queen spent a night in the hospital – her first visit in eight years – after cancelling a trip to Northern Ireland.

She was also pictured using a walking stick for the first time in more than 20 years.
