Kate, Princess of Wales, has been lauded for her recovery during a royal visit after her shoe appeared to become stuck in a muddy section of grass outside a community centre. The Prince and Princess of Wales stepped out in Scarborough on Thursday as part of a new mental health awareness campaign.

The couple dropped in to The Street, a community hub linked to other local organisations, and The Rainbow Centre.

But the Princess braved uneven ground to speak with gathered crowds in North Yorkshire, all while donning a chic pair of high heels.

Chatting with royal fans in the muddy grass near the community centre, Kate appeared to struggle to pull her shoe from the ground before smiling and continuing with the visit.

One local resident told Yorkshire Live: “It was wonderful to see the Royal Couple, Kate was an absolute star braving the muddy grass to greet people.”

During the visit, the Prince and Princess of Wales announced new funding totalling £345,000 in partnership with the Yorkshire-based Two Ridings Community Foundation.

A panel of community figures met by Kate and William on Thursday will distribute the money throughout the area’s mental health support organisations.

A tweet, promoted by the Prince and Princess’s Kensington Palace account, said the couple hoped the money would leave “a lasting legacy of support for young people’s mental health here in Scarborough”.

The message continued: “The young people we’ve had the pleasure of meeting today will play a key role ensuring this funding gets exactly where it needs to go and makes a difference to communities across Scarborough now and way into the future.”

Amanda Berry, the chief executive of the Prince and Princess’s Royal Foundation, said that making sure mental health services available for young people across the country is “something that the Prince and Princess of Wales feel extremely passionate about”.

She added that the charitable foundation was “delighted” to work with local organisations in “creating a long-lasting impact for young people in Scarborough”.

Jan Garrill, who heads up the Two Ridings Community foundation, added: “The fund for Scarborough is the perfect opportunity to involve young people in decisions that affect them.

“These funds are just the start, and we hope others show the same leadership and compassion and invest in this work.”

The couple spoke with several members of the crowds outside the community centres, stopping to take selfies with those who had braved the cold for a glimpse of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Prince William said the initiatives being set up in Scarborough were “leading where others will follow”.

He said, following trying his hand at modelling dough with children at the centres: “I think, particularly on the mental health side of things, tackling that stigma, talking about mental health and providing services throughout the community are crucial to how we go forwards and deal with mental health issues that many, many people face.”

The heir to the throne added: “Showing what can be done when a community comes together collaboratively is really something we’d like to follow on and be represented more widely across the country – you’re leading where I hope others will follow.”
