Kyle Sandilands is tipped for an Order of Australia medal in 2022

He may be the outspoken ‘bad boy’ of breakfast radio, but Kyle Sandilands could soon be receiving one of Australia’s highest honours.

Despite his many controversies, the KIIS FM host, 50, is apparently being considered for an Order of Australia medal in next year’s Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Sandilands addressed the rumours on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Monday, telling listeners his advocacy for the Covid-19 vaccine – and in particular his ‘Get Vaxxed, Baby’ jingle – had caught the attention of some very influential people.

He made the admission during an interview with former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke, who was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2020 ‘for distinguished service to cricket as a player at the national and international level’.

‘I’m hoping to get one this year [sic]. You know how I did the “Get Vaxxed, Baby” campaign? Someone said [to me], “Oh, you might be up for an Order of Australia,”‘ he said.

‘And I thought, “Well, I’d never get it at any other time because normally I’m the quite horrific sort of person.”‘

Co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson said it was unlikely to happen, however, because of his long list of scandals, which have earned him the nickname ‘vile Kyle’. 

The next Queen’s Birthday honours list will be announced in June 2022. This year’s list recognised the likes of actor Chris Hemsworth, Tony Abbott’s former chief of staff Peta Credlin, and sportspeople Glenn Lazarus, Robbie Slater and Erin Phillips.

While Sandilands’ chances may seem slim, there’s no doubt next year’s honours recipients will include Australians who have advocated for the Covid vaccine during the nation’s public health crisis.

Daily Mail Australia has even heard rumours former Bachelor star Abbie Chatfield is being considered for her tireless advocacy on social media.

The shock jock’s ‘Get Vaxxed, Baby’ campaign was vital in encouraging vaccine-hesitant Sydneysiders to roll up their sleeves for the life-saving jab earlier this year. 

Kyle got his second Pfizer shot at Westmead Hospital in western Sydney in July, and he released his ‘Get Vaxxed, Baby’ that same month.

Set to the tune of Ice Ice Baby by American rapper Vanilla Ice, the song encouraged Sydney residents to ‘lay down your tinfoil hats and just get vaxxed / so we can go back to the old ways / shaking hands, kissing strangers all day’.

NSW’s high vaccine uptake has been vital in pulling the state out of lockdown.
