Liverpool lose Thiago with unusual issue as Jurgen Klopp explains Darwin Nunez injury blow

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has explained that Thiago is absent for his side’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground as he has an ear infection. The German is also without Darwin Nunez, who was substituted with a hamstring issue before the hour mark on Wednesday night when his side defeated West Ham 1-0 at Anfield.

“No, I wish I could [take precautions],” Klopp told BT Sport when asked if the duo’s absence was a precautionary measure ahead of the encounter. “For Darwin, it’s a game too early. [He] still feels intensity of the game muscle-wise, so there was no chance – maybe tomorrow or Monday but not today. Thiago got a bad ear infection overnight so the decision was made a 5.15am. That’s how it is sometimes, that’s the reason for that.”

Nunez scored the only goal of the game against the Hammers as he rose to head home Kostas Tsimikas’ inviting cross midway through the first half. But he left the pitch 12 minutes after the interval, with Harvey Elliott coming on to replace him.

And after the match, Klopp revealed why he was forced to take Nunez off. “He felt a little bit the hamstring at half time, so then you have to make early changes, which is absolutely fine,” the German said.

“We can do that. With Darwin, at half time, everybody said ‘no it’s fine, it’s fine.’ But when somebody is five minutes on the bed then I’m concerned as well, it was a precaution.” And when asked about the Uruguay international’s fitness on Friday, Klopp said: “We will see.”
