Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been forced to deal with a number of injury problems in midfield as of late. The Reds have enjoyed a strong start to the new Premier League campaign after winning six of their opening 11 matches in the competition.

Klopp’s side currently sit fourth in the table after their 3-2 defeat at West Ham United before the international break.

The result marked Liverpool’s first loss of the season, putting an abrupt end to their hugely impressive start.

The Reds have scored more goals than any other Premier League club and currently have the third-best defensive record in the division.

However, they are lacking fit central midfielders at present, with a number of their biggest assets still on the treatment table.

Naby Keita, James Milner and Curtis Jones all missed the match against West Ham, although the latter is expected to be available for selection after the international break.

Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson was sent back from England duty over the weekend after picking up a minor issue in training, while Harvey Elliott is a long-term absentee.

It seems as though a January attempt to land a top-class midfielder could soon emerge as a priority for Liverpool in order to aid their ongoing bid for Premier League glory at the end of the season.

The Merseyside club decided not to strengthen in the middle of the park during the summer transfer window despite losing Georginio Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

However, their injury problems in the engine room could soon spell trouble if they are not addressed at the turn of the year.

    DON’T MISS

A move for Lille playmaker Renato Sanches could serve as the perfect solution for Liverpool, with the 24-year-old having been linked with an Anfield switch for some time.

Sanches played a significant role in helping Lille to win the Ligue 1 title last season and has featured heavily in recent weeks after recovering from a knee injury.

He produced an impressive performance for Portugal despite their defeat to Serbia on Sunday evening, scoring his side’s only goal of the match.

The midfielder gave Portugal an early lead inside two minutes and turned plenty of heads with his work in and out of possession.

However, the Euro 2016 champions were eventually undone by Dusan Tadic’s equaliser before a last-gasp winner from Aleksandar Mitrovic condemned them to a play-off spot in World Cup qualifying.

Despite the result, it seems as though Sanchez could be a shrewd signing for Liverpool if Klopp decides to dip into the January market once again.

The Reds were forced into a similar position last season after Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all picked up long-term injuries to leave them short in defence.

Liverpool left it late to land Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke and Preston North End defender Ben Davies on a permanent deal.

Whatever happens this time around, it will be crucial for those in command to make the right decisions if they choose to supplement the club’s hopes of Premier League glory with a fruitful mid-season recruitment drive.
