Liverpool's midfield injury crisis leaves Jurgen Klopp in similarly sticky situation

Liverpool have a fresh midfield injury crisis after Naby Keita was forced off during his side’s clash with Brighton on Saturday. The Reds blew a two-goal advantage at Anfield as Brighton claimed a well-earnt point in a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool were without Fabinho for their match with the Seagulls after the star midfielder was ruled out with a knee injury.

The former Monaco man sustained damage in his side’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid after coming off the bench at half time.

Fabinho has now missed his team’s last three Premier League encounters, with his absence in the first of those at Watford a result of his international duty with Brazil.

Liverpool have also been without Harvey Elliott since the start of September after the youngster was stretchered off against Leeds United.

The 18-year-old had to be taken to hospital in the aftermath of a challenge from Pascal Struijk and is likely to miss the majority of the campaign.

And the boss’ misery was compounded in January after Joel Matip was sidelined until the summer.

That meant Klopp had to play half a campaign without his three best centre-backs.

Liverpool’s season went downhill after Christmas as they went on a dismal run of form where they won just three times in 14 Premier League outings.

Their title hopes soon went out the window as they fell away from leaders Manchester City.

They did recover towards the end of the season, but it was too late by then as Klopp’s men could only secure third place.

Klopp will be desperate to prevent history from repeating itself once again this season.

The Reds have started the campaign in scintillating fashion and are the only team to remain unbeaten in the top-flight.

Klopp led his side to a 5-0 thrashing of Manchester United last month, while Liverpool have also drawn with Chelsea and Manchester City.

Chelsea currently lead the table after winning eight of their first 10 games, but Liverpool are hot on their heels.

The Reds are three points behind the Blues and will be desperate not to let their ongoing injury problems hamper them for a second consecutive campaign.
