The London Fire Brigade were called at around 1.35pm today to a fire at a flat above a shop on Batavia Mews, in New Cross. Fire crews from New Cross, Deptford, Old Kent Road and Lewisham fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

Lewisham Metropolitan Police Service tweeted: “Due to an incident at BATAVIA MEWS, SE14 New Cross Road MAQUIS OF GRANBY UP TO SAINSBURYS PETROL STN will be closed and A2 in both directions.

“Further updates will follow, motorists to avoid the area. Thank you.”

Footage shared on social media shows police advising the public away as black smoke erupts from the building – which is reportedly to the right of the New Cross Inn.

According to Jambuster, a Twitter account dedicated to showing congestion across the capital, revealed road closures due to the fire.

They tweeted: “A2 New Cross Road (SE14) (Both Directions) between Goodwood Road and Pagnell Street.

“The road is closed due to a building fire.

    “Expect delays on approach.”

One person tweeted: “New Cross is a MESS, just come out of New X Gate and the traffic is a lot.

    “Avoid if you can.”

Images shared on social media show a huge police cordon with police advising people to avoid the area.

In one image, the London Ambulance Service can be seen to be in attendance as well.

On Wednesday, 10 fire engines rushed to tackle a pub fire in Fitzrovia on Conway Street.

Around 70 firefighters scrambled to tackle the blaze.

Officers said the fire was “within the extraction system from the first floor to the roof vent”.

They added there are no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Jason Fisby said: “Access to the seat of the fire is challenging and very labour intensive.

“The number of fire engines at the scene is a reflection of the need for a high turn over of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.”

Fire crews from Islington and surrounding fire stations were called to the scene.
