Flash flooding has turned streets into rivers in London this evening. The Met Office warned that more homes and businesses are at risk of flooding, with an amber warning for storms covering London and other parts of the south of England. Incredible footage posted on social media showed a Geyser-like eruption of water at Hammersmith Bridge.

Some viewers attributed the huge column of water to an overflowed water drain, while others claimed it was due to a burst water main.

One person tweeted: “Mind-blowing water leak near Hammersmith bridge. Water main bursts 50ft high.”

Another person remarked: “My guess would be the high river tide is pushing against the flap on the overflow outfall.

“The floodwater is squeezing around the edges, like a finger partially over a hosepipe.”

The rain brought much of the capital to a standstill with cars abandoned due to the rising waters.

Eight London Underground stations were shut down due to flooding.

A dramatic video on Twitter showed water pouring into Pudding Hill station.

Floodwater could be seen gushing through the station, near Stratford in north east London.

The worst affected areas were initially Clapham and Camberwell in the south of the city.

However, flooding has also been reported in east and northeast London.

The Environment Agency issued two flood warnings for areas in London near Beverley Brook in Worcester Park and West Barnes.

Despite the flash flooding, temperatures are set to rise again from Monday, with London expected to hit 26C.
