Long-range forecast: Hot weather could blast Britain until July as sizzling heatwave grips

Glorious sunshine and blue skies have persisted over large areas of the UK and the blazing heatwave conditions are poised to last into the weekend as temperatures continue to soar. Tropical air has pushed in from the Azores and temperatures are set to rocket into the high twenties with even 30C in parts of the south of England at the weekend.

And, Britons may bask in the balmy weather conditions well into the month, and possibly until July, according to the latest BBC Weather long-range forecast.

The forecast for the week beginning June 14 says an area of high pressure is set to remain over the UK and “temperatures are expected to remain above average for the first half of the week”.

BBC Weather’s long-range outlook adds there is a 25 percent chance “high pressure stays overhead or slightly east of us well into July”.

If this happens, models suggest the warm-weather system could continue to engulf the UK and the BBC outlook adds it may “keep things warm, dry, and settled for the next several weeks.”

But, the BBC has warned towards the middle part of June there could be a slight break from the sweltering conditions as high pressure begins to slowly drift towards the Atlantic.

This slight change in weather pattern could increase the chances of unsettled conditions in the northwest of the UK by the end of next week, but temperatures are still set to remain “near or above average”.

BBC Weather’s long-range forecast from June 14-20 says: “High pressure that builds in strongly towards the end of next week should begin a slow westward trek in mid-June, gradually shifting away from the UK and into the North Atlantic.”

It adds: “Mid-June should remain warmer and drier than normal for a time as high pressure lingers near enough to deflect weather fronts.

“Temperatures are expected to remain above average for the first half of the week before moderating nearer to normal toward the weekend.

“By midweek and beyond, a few deep Atlantic lows are likely to try and push in from the west or southwest. These may bring some wet and windy days towards the end of the week, but there is a lot of uncertainty on the exact path these weather systems may take.

“If they tend to stay northwest of the UK, temperatures will remain near or above average and England will stay mostly dry as the bulk of the rain stays in western and northern areas.”

By the end of the month and into July, the BBC outlook adds: “These warm summertime highs tend to be slow to move around, so it could take several days for the high to move far enough away that we see a change in the weather pattern.

“There is also a risk, with about a 25 percent chance of occurrence, that high pressure stays overhead or slightly east of us well into July, keeping things warm, dry, and settled for the next several weeks.”

Today temperatures are expected to reach highs of 26C or 27C, with the mercury set to peak at 30C on Sunday.

The latest maximum temperature maps produced by Netweather show the UK turning dark red on Sunday as the sun beats down on the whole country.

Netweather.TV forecaster Jo Farrow said: “The June warmth just keeps on coming.

“The UK is now in a warm, moist flow thanks to a tropical maritime air mass from the southwest.

“This is bringing lots of cloud to western areas but there are clear skies and sunshine for much of Wales, England and bits of eastern Scotland to start the day. It already feels warm and as the day heats up temperatures could reach 26 or 27C.

“The weekend looks very warm and there are signs that by Sunday, the southeast could see 30C (86F).”
