‘When I was doing the show in 2016 that’s when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and I did the show and I sang that song,’ she said.

‘It’s like “There’s a road we’ve been travelling, lost so many on the way” and those words came up and the cast all started crying.

‘Tracy Turnblade, she was holding my hands with tears and I was like: “Babe I can’t sing and cry, you need to stop this, please stop it”.

‘The key change, there was no singing whatsoever because I was just in tears, the first four five rows they’re in tears and I’m sure they were like “wow this is really good acting” because nobody knew, I hadn’t said anything about it.’

The crowd, who at the time were not aware of her diagnosis, gave her a standing ovation.

Brenda is returning to the production of the third time playing Motormouth Mabel, which kicks off in Plymouth, Devon, on June 24.

Talking about her excitement to be getting back on the stage, she said: ‘I just get lost in it, the band, that live band. Just talking about it, I don’t have hair on my arms but they’re sticking up just at the thought of getting back up on stage.’

Touching on how she secured her first role on the West End, Brenda revealed she was approached by Sharon Osborne, her mentor, who told her the producers of Chicago had been in contact and wanted her to audition.

‘I stayed in until the semi-finals so after that I went for the audition and it is scary because I’d never been on the West End before on a stage like that.

‘I’d never done any acting apart from a school production of Scrooge and I was a pointing ghost.’

After being successful at the audition, Brenda was given a three to six month contract but ended up staying the production for six years.

Martin and Roman’s Weekend Best airs on Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30am on ITV.
