The smash – which involved five or six vehicles – took place between Junctions 22 (Denshaw) and 21 (Milnrow) of the motorway. All lanes of the M62 westbound are still currently blocked as emergency services deal with the incident.
Greater Manchester Police said: “M62 J22 to J21 Westbound.
“We have a report of a 5/6 Vehicle RTC.
“All the lanes are blocked.
“Police and Highways are making to the scene.”
Highways England urged drivers to avoid the area due to a “large amount of oil and diesel” on the road.
They tweeted: “The M62 westbound is closed between J22 and J21, to clear a large amount of oil and diesel following a multi-vehicle collision.
“Emergency services are in attendance.
“Delays are likely on the approach to this closure, with additional journey times also expected on the diversion route.”
National Highways: North West tweeted: “Road remains closed due to an earlier multi-vehicle collision.
“If you’re caught in the closure please bear with us as we have multiple recovery vehicles trying to clear the carriageway as quickly as possible.”
