That appears to have run its course though with United at risk of going back to square one all over again.
It’s been suggested that there is some trepidation on bringing in a new manager due to how badly the team looked under the likes of Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
And there has to be a level of respect laid at the doors of United should they stick with Solskjaer in an age where clubs are all too eager to wield the axe.
But if United harbour hopes of climbing back up the table and challenging with the very best, Solskjaer may not be the man to do so.
Accepting that now with time to spare and a chance to recover would give them a chance to resurrect their campaign.
If they wait, then the damage may prove irreversible and send United spiralling back down the league ladder.
