Miley Cyrus is coming to the defense of her deeper voice and rejecting the notion of singing the ‘way that females are “supposed” to sing.’

Having recently covered Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters, Cyrus told drummer Lars Ulrich that she felt ‘free’ performing the hit because, by recording from home instead of a studio, she could sing how she wanted.

‘I even went down to some of those octaves, because singing those super-low lead vocals is so satisfying,’ she gushed to Ulrich during their conversation for Interview magazine.

The 28-year-old musician lamented about being criticized her ‘whole life’ for her lower vocal register, with producers constantly demanding falsetto out of her because they associated it with femininity.

‘My whole life, whether in vocal training or just continuing to hone my craft, it’s always been about, ‘Why do you sound like a man? Where’s your f***ing falsetto, b****? Why can’t you sing the high octave of ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ anymore?’ she recalled.

Telling Ulrich that Nothing Else Matters ‘means something to me on the deepest level,’ Cyrus gushed over the fact she got ‘to sing in that low register, and I get to live in that authentic, genuine sound.’

She went on to explain the importance of staying true to her voice because singing is her primary way of representing and expressing herself.

‘I’ve worked with so many people who tell me, “We’re going to have to bring in a singer to hit those high parts.”

‘You know, “falsetto” is this Latin term for when a boy goes through puberty, but they still want him to sing in the choir. It means ‘false,’ the Hannah Montana alum explained.

‘I am who I am. I say what I mean in the moment, even if that changes tomorrow. I was honored by the fact that I didn’t have to sing this song in the way that females are “supposed” to sing.

‘You can hear that at the end of the song, when I take the gloves off and just start flying,’ the Bangers songstress said of her vocal performance.

‘That part of the song really grabs people. It’s that lower register of my voice. So I’m grateful to have a song where I can lean into that.’

Back in November of 2019, Cyrus had to undergo surgery on her vocal cords after being diagnosed with a condition called Reinke’s edema, which is ‘the polypoid degeneration of one or both vocal folds within Reinke’s space.’

During a 2020 appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Miley said that ‘over the last year’ she ‘noticed a really big change to my voice, kind of a heaviness to it.’

Despite all the down time and vocal rest, the Plastic Hearts hitmaker ‘kind of’ sees having the surgery as ‘a gift because I was able to understand my instrument.’

Interview magazine released Miley’s November cover story on Wednesday, including its subsequent photoshoot which showed the star posing topless for one cheeky shot.
