Scottish Tory Oliver Mundell hit back at pro-independence football pundit Michael Stewart over Brexit this week. The pair clashed during this week’s BBC Debate Night show when Mr Stewart launched into a tirade against Brexit. This comes amid a supply chain crisis throughout the UK, with many blaming shortages on post-Brexit rules.

Mr Stewart, who is also a columnist, blamed Brexit for the labour shortages amid a lack of workers in the abattoir and HGV sector.

He turned to Mr Mundell and asked: “Does he accept Brexit is not working?”

The Tory MSP responded: “No I don’t accept that.

“I think we’re in the early stages of Brexit that’s come at a difficult point during a global pandemic.”

He continued: “We’re seeing serious disruption to the energy market around the world.”

Stewart interjected: “Is there anywhere else that’s slaughtering pigs on a level that they are here?”

Mr Mundell said: “I don’t know is the answer to that question.”

“But what you won’t do and what so many people in our established political circles won’t do, is speak up for the million people in Scotland who voted for Brexit.

In comparison, 953,587 people cast their vote on the regional lists for Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP in the same year.

This follows a renewed push within the SNP for an independence vote.

Last weekend, Ian Blackford, the SNP’s leader at Westminster, became the most senior figure in the party to address a pro-independence rally since Nicola Sturgeon in 2019.

He led the march in Glasgow last Saturday before addressing the crowd in the city centre.

The march attracted around 600 pro-independence supporters.
