Deborah Sampson, 53, slammed the “unsafe” operating hours after one branch in Larkfield, Kent, started selling fuel from 10pm until 6am in a bid to reduce traffic congestion.

Ms Sampson, who works as a carer for people with learning difficulties, says the overnight hours are a discrimination against women as they may not feel safe going out at that time.

She said: “I am a single mum, and a carer to my mum, so I spend a lot of the time juggling everything.

Ms Sampson said the manager of the Larkfield petrol station told her the change in operating times was because of how busy the store was.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “The opening hours at our Larkfield petrol filling station temporarily changed for a few days to ease traffic in the area.”

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused we are now open again a usual, which is from 6am – 10pm.”
