Natalie Barr rolls eyes at anti-vaxxers whingeing about Sesame Street’s Big Bird getting the Covid vaccine

Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and David Koch have fired back at anti-vaxxers who criticised Sesame Street’s Big Bird for sharing a tweet about getting the Covid  vaccine.

The beloved children’s character revealed in a post last weekend that he had ‘got the Covid-19 vaccine’ before promoting its effectiveness against Coronavirus.

The post was criticised by several anti-vaxxers and conservative politicians in the US, but Barr and Koch later slammed the critics on Tuesday’s Sunrise.

Barr could be seen rolling her eyes and said: ‘Oh for goodness sake. Calm the farm people.’

‘Sums up American society doesn’t it,’ Kochie chimed in.

The tweet from the fictional Sesame Street character read: ‘I got the COVID-19 vaccine today! My wing is feeling a little sore, but it’ll give my body an extra protective boost that keeps me and others healthy.’

‘I’ve been getting vaccines since I was a little bird. I had no idea!’

Several anti-vaxxers and right-wing politicians lambasted the message, labelling it as ‘brainwashing’ children to get the shot and ‘propaganda’.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz was among those unhappy with Big Bird’s medical disclosure, and quote tweeted the comment with ‘Government propaganda for your 5 year old.’

Big Bird issued the tweet days after the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration in the US) approved Pfizer’s COVID vaccine for children aged five to 11, with critics accusing the character of trying to foist shots on children.

However, the character of Big Bird has always been active in child immunization campaigns and promoted public health measures since the 1970s.

Many parents in the US are currently divided on whether or not to vaccinate their children after the United States became one of the first countries in the world to approve vaccinations for children.

In Australia, only children aged 12 years and over can get the Covid vaccine.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration is currently waiting for more data over child vaccinations before approving the Pfizer shot for kids under the age of 12.

Vaccinations for children aged between 5 to 11 won’t be available until 2022.
