    Nia Vardalos reunites with My Big Fat Greek Wedding cast members to honor their late co-star Michael Constantine


    Just a week after her beloved on-screen father Michael Constantine passed away, My Big Fat Greek Wedding writer-star Nia Vardalos reunited with some of her co-stars.

    Vardalos, 59, took to Instagram on Thursday to share a snap of her with co-stars Gia Carides (Cousin Nikki), Louis Mandylor (Nick Portokalos) and Lainie Kazan (Maria Portokalos), who were the cousin, brother and mother to her character, Toula Portokalos in the 2002 film.

    The friends and co-stars gathered together to honor Constantine, who passed away at 94 years of age on September 8.

    ‘Friends in real life are why our films are so much fun to make,’ Vardalos began in her caption.

    ‘Cousin Nikki @gia.carides & brother Nick @louismandylorofficial & mom @lainie_kazan gathered to honor the memory of Michael Constantine, may he rest in peace,’ Vardalos added.

    It was recently confirmed that Vardalos is amassing this cast again for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, which is slated to film in Greece but filming is on hold due to insurance and the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Vardalos added that Constantine, ‘had told me he wouldn’t be able to join us for the third film and his wish was that we go on.’

    She added that she, ‘wrote the screenplay to reflect Michael’s decision and will always treasure his last messages to me, hoping we were filming soon.’

    She added that the ‘various variants’ of COVID-19 have made, ‘indies difficult,’ but they are still ‘hopeful’ to begin filming.

    Vardalos also asked her fans to, ‘stop calling my mom to ask if you can be in it and please do not tell me your ideas, the script is finished.’

    She also clarified that her character Toula and John Corbett’s character Ian, ‘are not grandparents!’ in the sequel.

    ‘We miss you Michael, thank you for bringing my words to life with such passion and accuracy, you will always be with us,’ Vardalos concluded.

    My Big Fat Greek Wedding became one of the most successful indie films of all time when it was released in 2002.

    The comedy about Toula and Ian’s wedding and the convergence of their crazy families, earned $241.4 million domestic and $368.7 million worldwide, from just a $5 million budget.

    The cast returned in 2016 for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which wasn’t quite as successful, earning $59.6 million domestic and $90.6 million worldwide.
