Novak Djokovic ends year world No 1 for seventh time leaving Federer and Nadal in his wake

Novak Djokovic defeated Hubert Hurkacz to reach the final of the Paris Masters and secured his spot atop the world rankings at year-end for a record seventh time. The Serb was in imperious form, particularly in the second set when he steamrolled through Hurkacz.

The world number one defeated Hurkacz in straight sets to advance to the final of the Paris Masters, winning 6-3 6-0 7-6 (7-5).

He was dominant in the second set, seeing off the seventh seed without dropping a game – and Djokovic continued his form to overcome the Pole in a difficult third set in which the Serb sarcastically applauded the crowd as they cheered a double fault.

Djokovic finally got over the line by winning the third-set tie-breaker.

The Serb came within one match of history at the US Open, as a title in Flushing Meadows would have made him the first man in 52 years to win the Calendar Grand Slam and the first male player to reach a record 21 Major titles, but he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the final.

The win in Paris brings Djokovic his own piece of history now, as it means the 20-time Grand Slam champion has secured year-end number one for a record seventh time, a record that has seen him surpass his idol Pete Sampras, with the pair tied at six end-of-season finishes at the top spot before the match.
