Owen Paterson fury: Labour erupts at Boris over 'worst double standards in 100 years'

The MPs watchdog recommended Mr Paterson should be suspended for 30 days for a breach of rules. The MP for North Shropshire has rejected the report’s findings and his allies will attempt to overturn the recommendation. Led by MPs such as Andrea Leadsom, Tories will push for an amendment on Wednesday which will trigger the creation of a new committee.

Following the news of an attempt to stop the suspension, Labour MPs revealed their fury over the plot.

Shadow Foreign Secretary, Lisa Nandy claimed the party was presenting “appalling double standards”.

Labour’s Jess Phillips also hit out at the plot.

The Birmingham Yardley said: “It’s mates rates – and by God are they some good rates of pay.”

Other MPs who have supported the amendment are prominent backbenchers such as Sir Bernard Jenkin, Robert Halfon, and Richard Drax.

The amendment states a new committee should be established on February 3, 2022.

The amendment states the committee would consider whether: “the current standards system should give Members of Parliament the same or similar rights as apply to those subject to investigations of alleged misconduct in other workplaces and professions, including the right of representation, examination of witnesses and appeal.

“Whether the case against Mr Owen Paterson should be reviewed or whether the Third Report of the Committee on Standards (HC 797) should be reconsidered by the House.”

The committee would also consist of nine members and be chaired by John Whittingdale.

This is a developing story, more to follow…
