Boris Johnson has been tipped to attempt coming back to lead the Conservative Party after Liz Truss dramatically quit on Thursday. Mr Johnson was forced into resigning in July and has maintained a low profile since, departing for a family holiday to the Caribbean while the UK and the country faced turmoil over Ms Truss’s proposed budget. Jeremy Vine on 5 caller Michael from West Sussex slammed the former Prime Minister for leaving the country at a time of crisis and lamented the prospect of his return.
Michael said: “It’s really sad that we’ve reached the state now where politicians are of such low ebb, no matter what party they’re in – they’re only in it for themselves.
“They couldn’t care less about their constituents and we’re in an appalling state.
“My father always taught me that, if you didn’t vote, you had no right to complain and he was perfectly right. I have voted for 62 years and I will never vote again for anybody.”
Jeremy Vine asked: “Did you vote Conservative for those 62 years?”

The caller said: “Jeremy, I’m very sorry, I did.”
He then erupted: “I wish I’d been on for the first part of your programme. When is Boris coming back from at the moment? Parliament is sitting, Jeremy, and he’s sunning himself in the Caribbean!”
Boris Johnson’s father on Friday would not say if the former prime minister was making a political comeback.
Stanley Johnson said of his son: “I think he is on a plane as far as I understand it”.
When asked on Good Morning Britain if Mr Johnson was returning from his trip abroad early, his father said: “I can’t tell you”.

However, he also told the programme: “I am going to listen to what the candidates have to say – this is the serious point – I will listen to all of them and I will say ‘OK, I think I’m going to support Boris. I am pretty sure I am going to support Boris’.
“I am just speaking now as a voter but I want to be sure that he sticks to the 2019 manifesto.
“I particularly want to be sure, because I am an environmentalist, that he gives a very strong promise not to proceed with (Jacob) Rees-Mogg’s absurd Bill which is coming before the House again next week.”
The former British MEP, a long-time environmentalist, said the proposed Bill could lead to the “scrapping of 750 environment laws”.
Despite no candidate officially confirming their intention to run in the leadership contest, Boris Johnson has already secured the support of 50 MPs who declared their intention to back him were he to stand.

Peterborough MP Paul Bristow insisted Mr Johnson would be the only Conservative member capable of giving the party a chance to win the next general election.
Mr Bristow told BBC Breakfast: “Well, that was then, this is now. We’re facing a crisis as a party. We could go down and be completely wiped out without Boris Johnson as our prime minister…
“Boris Johnson has a mandate from the members of the party and from the electorate. I’m sure my colleagues will reflect on that when they vote, and we can avoid a general election, we can go out and put this band back together, we can have political heavyweights around that Cabinet table and we can go on and win the next general election. I’m convinced of that”.
He said Mr Johnson can “unite all factions of our party”.
The suggestion comes as Labour maintains a strong 30-point lead over the Conservatives across most polls.
